Abstract
Objective: GPP 2022 guidelines endorse the use of alternative data dissemination formats, including ADDFs, to enhance publication content. We assessed trends in the use of ADDFs in medical journals in recent years.
Research design and methods: We compared data on the use of ADDFs by 35 journals each in cardiology, respiratory, and oncology in 2023 vs. 2016. Additionally, we surveyed the use of ADDFs among medical publication professionals.
Results: In 2023 vs. 2016, the proportion of cardiology (77.1% vs. 40.0%) and oncology (60.0% vs. 31.4%) journals offering ADDFs increased considerably. Across therapy areas, the most commonly offered ADDF was audio format in 2016 vs. graphical format in 2023, with information regarding peer-review and hosting portal lacking in most journal guidelines. Of 18 survey respondents, 83.3% had developed ADDFs, with the graphical format being the most common (76.9%), corroborating our screening results.
Conclusions: Effective integration of technology with publications has translated into more journals offering ADDFs in 2023, albeit with scope for greater clarity in journal guidelines.
